Lightning Assigns Six Players to Admirals Training Camp

NORFOLK, VA – The Tampa Bay Lightning assigned six players to Norfolk Admirals training camp today, it was announced by Admirals General Manager Mike Butters. Forwards Blair Jones, Chris Lawrence, Sean O’Connor and Brandon Segal, and defensemen Jamie Heward and Andy Rogers have been assigned to Norfolk’s training camp.

“Blair looked good in Tampa,” said Butters. “He spent a great deal of time training this summer and it showed. For him, it just came down to the fact that our parent club has an abundance of forwards on the roster. We expect Blair to continue on the developmental path here. He is a solid player.”

“Chris has the tools to develop into a good pro player. We are hopeful that he can have a good sophomore season and put up good numbers this year.”

“Coming in as a free agent, we knew Sean would have to stand out to be considered for a spot in our organization. He has earned the opportunity to compete for a spot on our roster. His gritty, two-way play could earn him a serious look.”

“Brandon did some good things in the scrimmages. We are hoping he will blossom this year into the two-way scorer we envision here in Norfolk.”

“Andy had a good game at Pittsburgh and showed he is developing and improving. He has a lot more confidence in his game.”

“Jamie brings a ton of skill and poise on the blueline. He exudes great character and he could be a huge asset to us. I see him as a leader here. With his ability and skill, I could see him being a first call up.”

With the assignments, thirty players will now report to training camp, which starts tomorrow morning at Norfolk Scope. The Admirals will hold on-ice practice and scrimmage sessions at Scope all week. Beginning on Tuesday, all practices will be open to the public. Monday’s training camp testing sessions will be closed to the public.

The Admirals will be on the ice from 10:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. from Tuesday through Thursday next week. On Friday, the Admirals will be on the ice from 10:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

The Admirals will travel to Philadelphia on Saturday to face the Phantoms in their first preseason exhibition game. The game will take place at the Polonia Bank Flyers Skate Zone in Northeast Philadelphia 6:05 p.m. The Admirals then travel to Hershey to face the Bears at the Giant Center on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. before returning to Scope for the second week of camp.

Training camp now consists of 15 forwards, 12 defensemen and three goaltenders. Returning 2007-08 Admirals will include forwards Jones, Bracken Kearns, Lawrence, Justin Keller and Segal, and defensemen Daryl Boyle, Justin Fletcher, Kevin Quick, Rogers and Jay Rosehill.

Rounding out the forward ranks will be Luciano Aquino, Matt Auffrey, Mathieu Curadeau, Mitch Fadden, Michael Field, Brady Leavold, Sean O’Connor (from Tampa’s camp, played last season with ECHL Phoenix), Sean O’Connor (played last season in OHL London and Plymouth), Jamie Thompson and Peter Zingoni. Defensemen will also include Jason Beckett, Heward, Brent Henley, Jay Holladay, Scott Jackson, Chris Kaufman and Jeff May. Goaltenders Nick Boucher, Craig Kowalski and Mike McKenna complete Monday’s roster.
