Lightning Recall RW Brandon Segal and C Paul Szczechura from Admirals
TAMPA BAY, FL – The Tampa Bay Lightning, NHL parent club of the Norfolk Admirals, have recalled right wing Brandon Segal and center Paul Szczechura from the Admirals, it was announced today by Lightning Executive Vice President and General Manager Brian Lawton. This is Segal’s first career NHL call-up.
Segal, 6-foot-2, 214-pounds, has appeared in 52 games with the Admirals this season. His 21 goals and 41 points both rank second on the club. Those marks are also AHL career highs for the sixth-year professional. This season, Segal also has a +1 rating, 70 penalty minutes, four power play goals, one shorthanded goal and two game-winning goals with the Admirals this season.
A native of North Delta, British Columbia, Segal is a veteran of 387 American Hockey League games between Norfolk, Portland and Milwaukee. He has 89 goals and 77 assists with 448 penalty minutes in those games. Segal has played in 41 career Calder Cup Playoff games with five goals and eight points. He helped the Milwaukee Admirals win the 2004 Calder Cup and also helped them to reach the 2006 Calder Cup Finals.
Segal, 25, was drafted by the Nashville Predators in the fourth-round, 102nd overall, of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. He was acquired by the Tampa Bay Lightning from the Anaheim Ducks on February 26, 2008. He played 242 career games in the Western Hockey League with the Calgary Hitmen, scoring 108 goals and 198 points with 358 penalty minutes.
Szczechura, 5-foot-11, 190-pounds, has appeared in 33 games for Norfolk this season, scoring 13 goals and adding 16 assists for 29 points. His +8 plus/minus rating leads the team. Szczechura appeared in his 100th career American Hockey League contest on Sunday at Albany.
This will be Szczechura’s second stint in the NHL this season. Szczechura made his NHL debut on December 2 with the Lightning in Philadelphia. He has played 18 games with Tampa Bay this season, scoring two goals and two assists with six penalty minutes. Szczechura, 23, signed a two-year deal with the Lightning on April 24.
Last season, Szczechura played under an AHL contract as a rookie, scoring 14 goals and 12 assists with the Admirals after being acquired from the Iowa Stars on January 15. Despite appearing in only 24 games with Norfolk last season, Szczechura led the team in scoring by a rookie and tied for the overall team lead in game-winning goals with three. He netted points in his first ten games with the Admirals – the longest scoring streak ever by a Norfolk rookie and tied for the fourth longest streak overall.
Szczechura has appeared in 100 AHL games between Norfolk and the Iowa Stars, scoring 32 goals and 35 assists with 76 penalty minutes. The undrafted native of Brantford, Ontario, played four seasons of college hockey at Western Michigan University, scoring 44 goals and 86 assists in 153 career games.
