Admirals Vanquish Devils

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk Admirals scored twice on the power play and received a 26-save effort from Riku Helenius as they swept a weekend set over the Lowell Devils with a 2-1 win on Saturday night at Norfolk Scope Arena.

After a scoreless opening period, the Admirals (26-30-3-5) took a 1-0 lead early in the second period with Blair Jones’ fifth goal in the past three games. Mike Lundin sent a pass from the top of the right circle to the top of the left circle. Jones’ one-timer deflected off a Lowell defender and went past the glove of goalie Jeff Frazee at 2:23 for a power play goal.

The Devils (28-26-2-6) struck back just under ten minutes later. Nicklas Bergfors sent a shot from the right faceoff dot that deflected off the right leg of Admirals goaltender Riku Helenius and into the cage at 12:18.

However, another power play goal – this time a five-on-three advantage – put the home team on top for good. Justin Keller found the rebound of a Jones shot in the right circle and patiently surveyed his options before firing a wrist shot five hole on Frazee at 17:06 of the second stanza.

Helenius stopped all seven Lowell shots in the final frame to preserve the victory.

Riku Helenius (27 shots, 26 saves) earned the win and leveled his season record at 7-7-0. Jeff Frazee (24 shots, 22 saves) suffered the setback.

Norfolk was 2-9 on the power play. Lowell was 0-1.

The Admirals will now embark on a five-game road trip. They will next hit the ice tomorrow evening to take on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The puck drops at 5:05 p.m.
