Admirals Back in Action at Scope This Weekend

NORFOLK, VA – The Norfolk Admirals will play the first home games of the 2009-10 season this Friday and Saturday night at Scope.

Norfolk opened their tenth season of American Hockey League action last Saturday night in Hershey as Andrew Gordon netted three power play goals to lead the Bears past the Admirals 3-1 at Giant Center. Blair Jones netted Norfolk’s only goal while Admirals goaltender Dustin Tokarski stopped 29 of 32 shots in his professional debut.

The Admirals will open the home portion of the schedule on Friday and Saturday by welcoming 2008-09 Admirals standout Brandon Segal and his Manchester Monarchs to Scope at 7:15 p.m. each night. Segal, who posted 26 goals and 26 assists in 69 games with Norfolk last season, signed with the Monarchs’ NHL affiliate, the Los Angeles Kings, this past summer. Each team in the East Division has played one game thus far in 2009-10 with the Binghamton Senators, Hershey Bears and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins each at 1-0-0-0 (2 points) and the Admirals, Adirondack Phantoms, Albany River Rats and East Division newcomer Syracuse Crunch each at 0-1-0-0 (0 points).   • C Mitch Fadden and G Dustin Tokarski made their professional debuts on Saturday night in Hershey.
  • RW Martins Karsums, F Tommy Goebel and RW Adam Hall each made their Admirals debuts on Saturday night in Hershey.
  • C Ryan Craig, RW Adam Hall and D Mike Lundin each wore an alternate captain’s ‘A’ on Saturday night in Hershey.
  • The Admirals fell to 4-5-0-1-0 (W-L-T-OTL-SOL) in season openers since joining the American Hockey League.
  • Norfolk is 5-3-1-0-0 in home openers since joining the American Hockey League.
  • The Admirals have won three straight games against Manchester and have points in five straight games (4-0-0-0-1) against the Monarchs.
  • With his goal on Saturday in Hershey, Blair Jones recorded his 97th career point as an Admiral. He now is only one point away from tying Shawn Thornton and Pavel Vorobiev for tenth on the all-time Norfolk (AHL) Admirals scoring list and is only three points away from becoming the tenth player to record 100 points in his AHL Admirals career.
  • Brandon Bochenski has 27 career power play goals as an Admiral. He is one power play goal away from tying Casey Hankinson’s Norfolk (AHL) Admirals record for career power play goals.
  • Bochenski also has 11 game-winning goals as an Admiral and is just one GWG away from tying Ajay Baines, Casey Hankinson and Matt Keith at the top of the AHL Admirals all-time game-winning goals list.
The Admirals will hold their first Military Appreciation Night of the 2009-10 season during the first home game of the season – this Friday, October 9. The Admirals will be facing off against the Manchester Monarchs (AHL affiliate of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings) at Scope starting at 7:15 p.m.

Red Level Tickets (normally $14) will be available for just $9 at the Norfolk Scope Box Office for all active or retired military, their dependents and reservists with valid military identification. On Saturday night, the Admirals will hold their first post-game skate of the season where fans can skate at Scope with their favorite Admirals following the game. A limited amount of skates will be available free of charge or fans may bring their own skates.

The Manchester Monarchs will provide the opposition for Norfolk in the Admirals’ home opener this Friday and Saturday at Scope. On Saturday night, the Monarchs opened up their season by doubling up the Albany River Rats 6-3 at the Times Union Center in Albany. In his professional debut, rookie center Andrei Loktionov netted a hat trick and added an assist. Former Admiral Brandon Segal scored Manchester’s first goal of the season. Goaltender Jonathan Bernier stopped 35 of 38 shots for the win.
