Admirals to Clash with Crunch at Scope on Friday

NORFOLK, VA – The Norfolk Admirals will clash with the Syracuse Crunch for the first time in nearly six years on Friday night at Scope before hitting the road for 14 of their next 18 games.

The Admirals split a pair of contests against the Portland Pirates last weekend at Scope. On Friday, Brandon Bochenski netted a pair of goals before the contest was six minutes old and assisted on the eventual game-winner in a 4-2 victory. On Saturday, Justin Keller scored a pair of goals but the Admirals fell to the Pirates 6-5.

This Friday, the Admirals will host with the Crunch at Scope for the first time since a 3-3 tie on January 17, 2003. Fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to the game for donation to the Salvation Army. More details are listed below. Following Friday’s game, the Admirals will play 14 of their next 18 contests on the road.

At 3-5-0-0 (6 points), the Admirals are in seventh place in the American Hockey League’s East Division. The East is led by the Albany River Rats and Hershey Bears (5-4-0-0, 10 pts). They are followed by the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (4-2-1-0, 9 pts), Adirondack Phantoms (4-3-1-0, 9 pts), Binghamton Senators (3-4-2-0, 8 pts) and Syracuse Crunch (3-4-1-1, 8 pts).   • The Admirals surrendered a power play goal to the opposition for the first time in six games on Saturday night vs. Portland after killing 18 consecutive opponent power plays.
  • The Admirals have allowed only ten opponent power play opportunities over the past five games. They gave up 15 power play opportunities over their first three games of the season.
  • Through eight games this season, the Admirals are averaging 14.5 penalty minutes per game – the fourth-lowest total in the AHL. Last season, Norfolk averaged 23.13 penalty minutes per game – the most in the AHL.
  • Ryan Craig has points in six straight games (6G, 2A) and goals in four straight games (5G). Craig’s goal-scoring streak is tied for the longest in the American Hockey League this season while his point streak is tied for the second-longest in the AHL this season.
  • Craig and teammate Brandon Bochenski are tied for third in the AHL with six goals apiece.
  • Bochenski and Craig are also tied for the team lead in scoring with eight points apiece.
  • Bochenski’s first goal of the game was his 28th career power play goal as an Admiral, tying him for first place all-time on that list with Casey Hankinson in AHL Admirals history.
  • Bochenski has 66 career goals as an Admiral. He is only two goals behind Ajay Baines (68) for second place and ten goals behind Casey Hankinson (76) for first place on the all-time Norfolk Admirals (AHL) goal-scoring list.
  • Bochenski ranks eighth in all-time Norfolk Admirals (AHL) points with 127 points and is just seven points away from tying Matt Henderson (134) for fifth place on that list.
  • Paul Szczechura has points in four games in a row (2G, 3A).
  • Bochenski has points in three consecutive contests (3G, 2A).
  • Juraj Simek has points and assists in three straight games (1G, 4A).

Brandon Bochenski paced the Admirals with four points in a pair of home games against the Portland Pirates last week at Scope. On Friday, Bochenski scored two goals in the game’s first six minutes and assisted on the eventual game-winning goal in the second period in a 4-2 victory over the Pirates. On Saturday, Bochenski again helped the Admirals to a fast start by assisting on the game’s opening tally. However, Portland came from behind to defeat Norfolk 6-5.

Bochenski and teammate Ryan Craig are now tied for third in the AHL with six goals apiece. Bochenski and Craig are also tied for the team lead in scoring with eight points apiece. Bochenski’s power play goal on Friday was his 28th as an Admiral, tying him with Casey Hankinson for first place on the Norfolk (AHL) Admirals all-time power play goals list.

The Admirals are celebrating their twentieth birthday today. On October 27, 1989, the Hampton Roads Admirals defeated the Virginia Lancers 6-3 at Norfolk Scope Arena in the team’s first regular season game. Friday night is Salvation Army Night with the Admirals to help kick off the 2009 Kettle Campaign and food drive. The Admirals will take on East Division newcomer the Syracuse Crunch (3-4-1-1) for the first time at Scope this season on Friday night. The Crunch came from behind to defeat the Admirals 5-4 in Syracuse on October 16 in the only prior meeting this season. Alexandre Picard leads the team with four goals and eight points this season. Columbus prospect netminders Kevin Lalande (1-2-0, 2.68, .918) and Dan LaCosta (2-3-1, 3.59, .897) man the pipes for the Crunch, who are off until playing in Norfolk on Friday.
