WINNIPEG, Man. – The Norfolk Admirals (5-6-0-0) received goals from Paul Szczechura, Martins Karsums and Adam Hall to compliment a strong 19-save performance from Riku Helenius as they swept a two-game set against the defending Western Conference Champion Manitoba Moose (8-6-2-0) with a 3-1 victory on Tuesday night at the MTS Centre.
The Moose took a 1-0 lead 8:34 into the game. Derek Leblanc stole the puck from Admirals goaltender Riku Helenius behind the net and sent a quick centering pass into the slot. Tommy Maxwell found the pass and fired a shot into the net before Helenius could return to the crease.
The Admirals controlled the second period, out-shooting the Moose 10-6 and out-scoring the hosts 2-0. Norfolk tied the game 9:12 with Paul Szczechura’s fourth goal of the season. Dana Tyrell sped into the attacking zone along the left wing and sent a shot off of Machesney’s leg pads. Szczechura found the rebound and stashed it into the net out of mid-air.
The Admirals took a 2-1 lead at 17:38 with Martins Karsums’ first goal as an Admiral. Mike Lundin sent a long pass from the Admirals half of the neutral zone to Karsums as he crossed the Manitoba blueline. Karsums broke in alone on Machesney and sent a shot top-shelf over the outstretched glove of the netminder.
Norfolk got a bit of insurance mid-way through the final frame as a power play expired. Justin Keller sent a shot from the right faceoff circle that deflected off the shaft of Adam Hall’s stick for Hall’s first goal of the season at 9:43.
Minutes later, the Admirals killed off a 48-second five-on-three Manitoba power play and Helenius shut the door with nine saves in the final frame to seal the victory.
Riku Helenius (20 shots, 19 saves) earned his first win of the season. Daren Machesney (29 shots, 26 saves) was saddled with the loss.
Norfolk was 0-2 on the power play. Manitoba was 0-5.
