Lightning Assign D Matt Smaby to Admirals for Conditioning

TAMPA BAY, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Lightning, NHL parent club of the Norfolk Admirals, have assigned defenseman Matt Smaby to the Admirals for conditioning, Lightning Executive Vice President and General Manager Brian Lawton announced today.

Smaby, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, has appeared in five games with Norfolk this season and is scoreless with two penalty minutes. Smaby has not appeared in a game for the Lightning so far this season.

Smaby split last season between the Admirals and Lightning. He appeared in 25 games with Norfolk, recording two goals, four assists and 30 penalty minutes. In a career-high 43 NHL games with the Lightning last season, Smaby posted his first four NHL points with four assists and added 50 penalty minutes. His 19:05 average ice time was also the highest of his career and was fourth among NHL rookie defensemen with 20 or more games played.

Smaby has appeared in 57 career NHL games (all with the Lightning) with four assists and 62 penalty minutes. He has also appeared in 154 career AHL games between the Admirals and Springfield Falcons, recording five goals and 23 assists with 141 penalty minutes.

Selected in the second round, 41st overall by the Lightning at the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Smaby played three seasons for the University of North Dakota (2003-04 through 2005-06), captaining teams that reached the NCAA Frozen Four in consecutive seasons.
