Admirals Prepare for Three Home Games Against Rivals

NORFOLK, VA – The Norfolk Admirals are preparing to wrap up a five-game homestand with three games at Scope against East Division rivals. The games will culminate with the third annual Pink in the Rink contest on Saturday night.

Norfolk went 1-2-0-0 last week beginning with a 5-4 victory over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Wednesday night in Pennsylvania. The Admirals then began their homestand with a pair of games against Syracuse, losing to the Crunch 4-1 on Friday and 2-1 on Saturday. Syracuse goaltender Kevin Lalande stopped 71 of 73 Admirals shots in those two contests.

Norfolk’s week begins tomorrow against the Hershey Bears and concludes Friday and Saturday against the Adirondack Phantoms. Wednesday night is Family Fun Pack Night and Student Rush Night, Presented by Pit Bull and Baxter’s Sports Lounge. Friday night is Norfolk Public Schools Night and Admirals Playing Card Giveaway Night, Presented by John’s Tax Service and Sinclair Communications. Saturday night is Pink in the Rink Night, presented by the Admirals and the Tidewater Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. More details on all of these promotions and giveaways are given below.

At 16-21-2-0 (34 points), the Admirals are tied for sixth place in the American Hockey League’s East Division but are just two points back of fourth place. The East is led by the Hershey Bears (29-8-0-2, 60 pts). They are followed by the Albany River Rats (21-15-2-2, 46 pts), Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (20-17-1-1, 42 pts), Adirondack Phantoms (17-18-2-0, 36 pts) and Binghamton Senators (16-17-3-1, 36 pts).   • Norfolk’s top three crowds this season have been their last three home games: 5,017 on 12/29 vs. Hershey, 4,419 last Friday vs. Syracuse and 4,598 last Saturday vs. Syracuse.
  • Juraj Simek has established a new career high with ten goals this season. He has points in six of his last nine games (5G, 1A).
  • Matt Lashoff has points in four of his last six games (2G, 3A).
  • Lukas Krajicek has points in four of his last seven games (0G, 4A).
  • Defenseman Kenny MacAulay was signed to a Professional Tryout Contract on Wednesday and recorded his first point with Norfolk in his second Admirals game on Friday vs. Syracuse.
  • Admirals leading scorer Brandon Bochenski notched a goal and an assist in the Tampa Bay Lightning’s 4-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Friday.
  • The forward line of Adam Hall (2G, 2A), Martins Karsums (0G, 4A) and Ryan Craig (2G, 0A) along with defenseman Matt Lashoff (0G, 2A) combined to score all but one of Norfolk’s 13 points in the team’s 5-4 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Wednesday. Karsums tied an AHL Admirals record with four assists in the game.

When the Admirals take on the Hershey Bears at Scope tomorrow it will also be another Student Rush Night, brought to you by Pit Bull Energy Drink and Baxter’s Sports Lounge. All students have to do is show their valid, current student ID at the Scope Box Office after 2:00 p.m. on the day of the game and receive a White Level ticket for just $8 (normally $12). Plus, students will receive a buy one, get one free offer for the next Student Rush night. High School and College IDs are accepted. This offer is not available anywhere other than the Scope Box Office. This great deal is available for all Tuesday and Wednesday night home games.

Student Rush tickets will also get students $5.99 menu items at Baxter’s Sports Lounge before and after the game that night. Baxter’s Sports Lounge is located just behind Norfolk Scope at 500 Granby Street. Students of any age with Student Rush tickets will be permitted into Baxter’s prior to game time. After the game, only students over age 21 with Student Rush ticket stubs will be permitted unless a parent or guardian accompanies them.

PINK IN THE RINK: Get more information
The Norfolk Admirals and Susan G. Komen for the Cure will hold “Pink in the Rink” on Saturday. This third annual event will seek to educate and raise awareness about breast cancer while also raising monies for the Tidewater Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Events leading up to and during the game include a breast cancer informational session, survivor participation during game night, “Hockey 101- A Clinic for Women” and a silent auction for player-autographed Tampa Bay Lightning items. Even the ice will be pink.

Special $12 Red Level Tickets will be available for the game with a portion of the proceeds going to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Tickets may be purchased through Susan G. The Norfolk Admirals today announced that the Admirals Hour Talk Show will air on Thursday evenings from 5:30 – 6:30 on ESPN Radio 94.1-FM beginning this week. The Admirals will once again focus on East Division opponents this week as they host the Hershey Bears on Wednesday night and the Adirondack Phantoms on Friday and Saturday nights.

On Wednesday, the Admirals will face the Hershey Bears for the sixth time this season and the second time at Scope. The Admirals have dropped all five meetings with the Bears thus far this season. Hershey is on a 12-game winning streak. The perennial top scoring duo of Keith Aucoin (19+26=45) and Alexandre Giroux (13+27=40) rank second and fourth in the AHL in points, respectively, while teammate Andrew Gordon (18+20=38) is tied for seventh. Goaltender Braden Holtby has nine of Hershey’s wins during a 12-game winning streak and is 11-1-1 with a league-leading 1.45 goals-against average and a league-leading .950 save percentage in 13 games this season. Jason Bacashihua (7-2-1, 2.69, .907) is also manning the pipes for the Bears at this time. Michal Neuvirth (10-5-0, 1.99, .929) is currently on NHL recall to the Washington Capitals. Hershey comes to Norfolk after sweeping the Manitoba Moose in Winnipeg last Friday and Saturday.

A new chapter of the rivalry between the Admirals and Phantoms at Scope will open on Friday and Saturday as Adirondack comes to Norfolk for the first two of four visits this season. Both teams have a victory in the season series after a 2-1 overtime win for Norfolk on December 4 and a 3-2 Adirondack win on January 2. Jon Matsumoto leads Adirondack in points with 31 and is tied with Stefan Legein for the team lead with 16 goals. First-year North American professional goaltender Johan Backlund (11-8-0, 2.70, .907) has won his last five games and leads the Phantoms with 11 victories. He is joined between the pipes by veteran John Grahame (0-5-0, 3.03, .885). Adirondack suffered its third loss in its last four games on Saturday versus Portland with a 2-1 setback. The Phantoms will host Bridgeport in Glens Falls on Wednesday before traveling to Norfolk.
