Admirals Move Into Third Place Tie With Win Over Phantoms
ADIRONDACK, N.Y. – Dustin Tokarski made 36 saves and Justin Keller’s shorthanded goal late in the second period was the difference as the Norfolk Admirals (22-23-3-0) topped the Adirondack Phantoms (22-21-2-1) 2-1 on Saturday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
With the victory, the Admirals have gained 11 of a possible 12 points thus far on their seven-game road trip (5-0-1-0) and have tied the Phantoms for third place in the AHL’s East Division. The final game of the road trip is a matchup tomorrow afternoon against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at 3:00. The Admirals return to Scope on Wednesday to face the division-leading Hershey Bears.
Adirondack took a 1-0 lead on a power play goal 15:25 into the first period. Marc-Andre Bourdon sent a shot from the blueline that bounced off Admirals goaltender Dustin Tokarski into the slot. Patrick Maroon found the rebound and fired a quick shot past Tokarski.
The Admirals tied the game with just 29 seconds left in the first period. Mitch Fadden carried the puck into the attacking zone along the left wing and centered a pass from the left faceoff dot into the slot. Matt Fornataro deflected the puck past Adirondack goaltender John Grahame for his fourth goal of the season.
Norfolk took a 2-1 lead with a Justin Keller shorthanded goal at 16:48 of the second period. Keller stole the puck from an Adirondack attacker near the left point in the Norfolk zone and sped through the neutral zone and into the Phantoms zone through the right circle. Keller took a shot in mid-stride from the right faceoff dot that got past the right shoulder of Grahame for Keller’s seventh goal of the season.
Tokarski stood on his head in the final frame and did not allow an Adirondack goal despite the fact that the Phantoms out-shot the Admirals 12-4 in the third period.
Dustin Tokarski (36 shots, 35 saves) earned the win. John Grahame (19 shots, 17 saves) took the loss.
Norfolk was 0-5 on the power play. Adirondack was 1-5.
The Admirals will conclude their seven-game road trip tomorrow afternoon with against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The puck drops at 3:00 p.m. All games are broadcast on STAR 1310-AM, star1310.com and ahllive.com.
