ALBANY, N.Y. – The Norfolk Admirals (27-25-3-1) saw their three-game winning streak end as they lost to the Albany River Rats (29-20-3-3) 2-1 on Monday evening at the Times-Union Center. The Admirals fell six points back of the River Rats for second place in the American Hockey League’s East Division standings.
The Admirals will visit the Hartford Wolf Pack on Wednesday before returning to Norfolk to square off against the Springfield Falcons on Friday and Saturday nights at Scope.
Mark Parrish got the Admirals on the board first early in the second period. Ryan McGinnis sent a breakout pass from the Norfolk zone to Parrish at the Albany blue line. Parrish had a partial breakaway on River Rats goaltender Justin Peters and fired a wrist shot over the goalie’s glove and just under the crossbar for his 14th goal of the season at 4:16.
Albany responded just over three minutes later. Jamie McBain sent a slap shot from the right point that bounced off of Norfolk netminder Dustin Tokarski. Tokarski, who had his stick knocked out of his hands earlier on the play, was unable to secure the puck, and former junior teammate Drayson Bowman swept the rebound into the net past Tokarski’s left leg at 7:43.
The River Rats took the lead for good with a power play goal midway through the final frame. Bryan Rodney sent a one-timer from the right point that eluded Tokarski along the ice past his right leg at 9:11.
Peters stopped all 12 Norfolk shots in the final frame to secure the 2-1 victory for Albany.
Dustin Tokarski (31 shots, 29 saves) was saddled with the loss. Justin Peters (23 shots, 22 saves) earned the win.
Norfolk was 0-2 on the power play. Albany was 1-3.
The Admirals will visit Hartford, Connecticut, on Wednesday for their last 2009-10 regular season game against the Wolf Pack. The puck drops at 7:00 p.m.
