BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Blair Jones and Troy Milam each had two goals as the Norfolk Admirals (1-0-0-0) used a franchise-record six-goal second period to upend the Binghamton Senators (1-1-0-0) 7-4 in the Admirals’ 2010-11 regular season opener on Saturday night at the Broome County Veteran’s Memorial Arena.
Binghamton struck first midway through the first period. Corey Locke carried the puck into the Norfolk zone along the right wing and threaded a pass to Ryan Keller in the slot. Keller one-timed the puck past the gloved hand of Admirals netminder Dustin Tokarski at 13:20 for a 1-0 Senators lead.
A wild second period began 5:16 into the stanza when Troy Milam netted the first goal of the season for Norfolk. Marc-Antoine Pouliot’s shot from the left circle hit the right leg of Senators goaltender Barry Brust and caromed into the slot. Milam picked up the puck in the slot, skated toward the left circle and sent a backhand shot under the right leg of Brust and into the net.
Less than three minutes later, Jim O’Brien put the Senators back on top at 8:02.
However, the Admirals knotted the game at 2-2 less than two minutes later on the power play. Kevin Quick sent a pass from the left point to Ty Wishart at the right point. Wishart’s shot went through a screen and into the net at 9:43.
Norfolk took its first lead of the game just over four minutes later. Pouliot won a battle for the puck in the left corner and chipped a pass toward the bottom of the left circle. Blair Jones collected the puck and sent a shot over the glove of Brust at 13:56 for a 3-2 lead.
A pair of quick strikes by Binghamton gave them a 4-3 lead less than two minutes later. Bobby Butler scored at 15:31 and, just 14 seconds later, O’Brien’s second tally of the game put the home team in front 4-3 at 15:45.
However, the lead was short-lived, as the Admirals tallied three goals in a 1:37 span to claim a 6-4 lead. Milam scored a power play goal at 16:10 with a wrist shot from the left point through a screen that tied the game at 4-4.
Jones scored his second goal of the game off a tic-tac-toe passing play 24 seconds later. Pouliot sent a pass from the left circle to Juraj Simek at the right half wall. Simek then quickly fired a pass to the bottom of the left circle where Jones one-timed it past Brust at 16:34 for a 5-4 lead. Pouliot picked up his fourth assist of the game on the play, tying an AHL Admirals franchise records for most assists in a single game.
Norfolk established a franchise record for goals in a single period 1:13 later with their sixth goal of the second period. Vladimir Mihalik sent a shot from the high slot that Mike Angelidis deflected past Brust at 17:47 for a 6-4 Admirals lead.
The Admirals cemented the victory with 2:03 remaining in the game as Matt Fornataro chipped in a James Wright feed for a 7-4 Norfolk lead.
Dustin Tokarski (36 shots, 32 saves) picked up the win. Barry Brust (39 shots, 32 saves) took the loss.
Norfolk was 2-5 on the power play. Binghamton was 0-5.
