Undefeated Admirals Embark on Road Trip

NORFOLK, VA – The undefeated Norfolk Admirals will encounter a tough test this week as they hit the road for four games in five nights in four different cities.

Last week, the Admirals swept the Worcester Sharks at Scope to improve their record to 3-0-0-0. The Admirals made their first regular season appearance at Scope on Friday and claimed a 4-0 win over the Sharks. Cedrick Desjardins earned the shutout with 29 saves – many as his team killed off eight opponent power plays. In the Saturday rematch, Chris Durno, Johan Harju and Paul Szczechura each scored twice in part of a franchise-record 56-shot attack as Norfolk upended Worcester 7-2.

The Admirals now embark on a four-game road trip with stops in Hartford on Wednesday, Syracuse on Friday, Albany on Saturday and Worcester on Sunday.

At 3-0-0-0 (6 points), the Admirals are in second place in the American Hockey League's East Division. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (4-0-0-0, 8 pts) lead the division. Trailing the Admirals are the Hershey Bears (2-1-0-1) and Adirondack Phantoms (2-3-1-0) tied for third place with five points, the Albany Devils (2-1-0-0) and Binghamton Senators (2-3-0-0) tied for fifth place with four points, the Syracuse Crunch (1-2-0-1, 3 pts) in seventh place and the Charlotte Checkers (1-4-0-0, 2 pts) in eighth place. • Norfolk has begun a season with wins in each of its first three wins for just the second time in its 11-year AHL history (2004-05).
  • Norfolk leads the league in offense at an average of six goals for per game and is tied for the league lead in defense at an average of only two goals allowed per game.
Sixteen of Norfolk's 20 skaters who have appeared in at least one game this season have points.
  • Eleven of those players are averaging at least one point per game.
  • Norfolk is one of only two AHL teams that has not allowed a goal in the third period (Hershey).
  • Cedrick Desjardins became the second goaltender in as many years to record a shutout in his Norfolk debut. Dustin Tokarski turned in a 26-save performance against the Manchester Monarchs on October 9, 2009 in his pro/AHL/Norfolk debut.
  • Norfolk leads the league with an average of 40 shots for per game.
  • Norfolk's 56 shots on goal on Saturday against Worcester eclipsed the former AHL Admirals franchise record of 53 shots, which had previously occurred twice (February 20, 2010 vs. Springfield Falcons and January 7, 2006, vs. Lowell Lock Monsters).
  • Norfolk's special teams have also been spectacular as they have the second-best power play (4/13, 30.8%) and third-best penalty kill (15/16, 93.8%) in the AHL.
  • Jon Cooper is just the second AHL Admirals head coach to win his first three games with the team as head coach (Jim Johnson, 2009-10). He also joins Johnson as the only Norfolk head coach to win his first game as head coach of the Admirals.
Paul Szczechura: 2GP, 3G, 0A, 3PTS
Center Paul Szczechura led a balanced Norfolk attack last week with three goals in two games against the Worcester Sharks. He capped scoring in a 4-0 victory over the Sharks on Friday with a third period tally. He then opened scoring on Saturday against Worcester and added a second period tally in a 7-2 win. His second period goal was his 100th career AHL point (138GP, 43G, 57A, 100PTS). Szczechura leads Norfolk with his three goals. He is tied for third in points with four.
