Admirals Top Division-Leading Penguins 4-1 to Close Out Road Trip

WILKES-BARRE, Penn. – Cedrick Desjardins made 27 saves and Blair Jones scored twice as the Norfolk Admirals (8-4-3-1) defeated the East Division-leading Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (12-3-0-0), 4-1, on Friday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. The Admirals concluded their five-game road trip with six of a possible ten standings points (2-1-2-0) and will return to Norfolk to host the Adirondack Phantoms tomorrow night at Norfolk Scope Arena.

The Penguins took a 1-0 lead 5:39 into the first period. Tim Wallace scored on a shot from the bottom of the left circle for a four-on-three power play goal.

The Admirals tied the game at 1-1 just over six minutes later. Matt Fornataro sent a shot from the right faceoff circle that Penguins goaltender Brad Thiessen kicked into the slot with his right leg. Chris Durno found the rebound in the slot and sent it into the net for his fifth goal of the season at 11:43.

Norfolk took a 2-1 lead just 46 seconds into the second stanza. Mike Vernace sent a high snap shot from the blue line that Blair Jones deflected out of mid-air past Thiessen.

Jones doubled his team’s lead 12:27 into the second period. Kevin Quick sent a shot from the left point that Thiessen stopped. However, Jones was one of several Admirals crowding the crease and he put the rebound into the net low past Thiessen’s glove for his seventh goal of the season and a 3-1 lead.

Alex Berry cemented the victory for Norfolk with an empty-net goal with 41 seconds remaining in regulation.

Cedrick Desjardins (28 shots, 27 saves) earned his fifth win of the season. Brad Thiessen (25 shots, 22 saves) shouldered his first loss of the season.

Norfolk did not have a power play in the game. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was 1-2 on the power play.
