Admirals Set Sail on Busy Week

NORFOLK, VA – After a pair of victories against division opponents last weekend, the Admirals prepare for a busy week ahead. The Admirals will play five games in seven nights, beginning tonight in Charlotte. The team will return home Wednesday night, before leaving on a six-game road trip.

The Admirals concluded their five-game road trip Friday night with a decisive victory over division rival Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Blair Jones scored twice and Cedric Desjardins made 27 saves as the Admirals skated away with a 4-1 victory over the Penguins. On Saturday night, the Admirals returned home to Scope against the Adirondack Phantoms. Alex Berry scored twice and Dustin Tokarski made 21 saves as the Admirals came out on top with a 3-1 victory.

The Admirals and the Checkers begin a home-and-home set of games tonight in Charlotte and will conclude it Wednesday night in Norfolk. After taking Thanksgiving off, the Admirals will embark on a six-game road trip through the Northeast, with games Friday in Adirondack, Saturday in Springfield and Sunday in Bridgeport.

At 9-4-3-1 (22 pts.) the Admirals are in third place in the East Division. The Admirals trail only the division leading Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at 14-3-0-0 (28 pts.) and the Charlotte Checkers 10-7-1-2 (23 pts.). Trailing the Admirals are the Hershey Bears (10-7-0-1, 21 pts.) and Binghamton Senators (9-8-2-1, 21 pts.). The Albany Devils (8-9-0-0) and the Syracuse Crunch (6-8-1-3) each have 16 points and the Adirondack Phantoms (3-14-2-0) wrap-up the division with 8 pts. • Norfolk has registered standings points in 13 of 17 games this season. Only San Antonio (15), Hamilton (15), Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (14) and Portland (14) have registered standings points in more games this season.
  • Norfolk has not allowed an even strength goal in its past two games.
  • Both of Norfolk's games last week featured former Admirals captains in the same role for the opponent. 2009-10 Norfolk captain Ryan Craig is now the captain of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. 2007-08 Norfolk captain Dan Jancevski is now the captain of the Adirondack Phantoms.
  • Defenseman Radko Gudas registered back-to-back plus-2 performances last weekend and has had a plus/minus of even or better in 12 of 14 games this season. Gudas leads the Admirals with a +10 rating and is tied for third in the AHL (first among rookies). He also has points in three consecutive games (3A).
  • Goaltender Dustin Tokarski is 2-for-2 stopping penalty shots this season. He stopped Denis Hamel on Saturday vs. Adirondack and also stopped Charlotte's Chris Terry on November 6 at Scope. Tokarski joins Houston's Nolan Schaefer as the only AHL goaltenders to have faced two penalty shots this season.
  • Norfolk has stopped 14 of 18 (77.8%) regular season penalty shot attempts in its franchise history.
  • After Friday's 4-1 victory over the Penguins, Norfolk has won five of its last eight games on the road against the Penguins. Prior to that stretch, the Admirals had won just two of their prior 22 games in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton – including a 17-game winless streak.
  • The Admirals did not have a power play opportunity for just the second time in their AHL history on Friday at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. They also won the first such game on March 20, 2010 at Scope against the Adirondack Phantoms.
  • On Saturday, Mike Vernace became the sixth different Admiral to be recalled by the Tampa Bay Lightning this season, joining Blair Jones, Mathieu Roy, Marc-Antoine Pouliot, Johan Harju and James Wright. Jones and Roy remain in Tampa Bay.
  • Forward Mitch Fadden, who spent his rookie campaign in Norfolk last season, is tied for the ECHL scoring lead with 22 points (8G, 14A) in 16 games this season with the Florida Everblades. He is also tied for seventh in goals and is tied for second in assists in the league.
Alex Berry: 2GP, 3G, 1A, 4PTS
Winger Alex Berry netted goals in consecutive games for the first time in his AHL career to lead the Admirals to a pair of victories last week. In Friday's 4-1 win at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, he assisted on the game-winning goal and tacked on an empty-netter while tying for the team lead with a plus-3 rating. The following night in Norfolk, he scored the game-tying and game-winning goals in a come-from-behind 3-1 victory over the Adirondack Phantoms. The game was the second-year pro's first multiple-goal game of his AHL career.

Berry has registered five goals and eight points with a plus-5 rating and 19 penalty minutes in 15 games this season for Norfolk.
