NORFOLK, Va. – Zac Dalpe scored twice in an eleven-second span in the final minute as the Charlotte Checkers (11-8-1-2) upended the Norfolk Admirals (10-5-3-1), 4-3, on Wednesday night at Norfolk Scope Arena. The Admirals will now embark on a six-game road trip beginning on Friday night against the Adirondack Phantoms.
The Checkers took a 1-0 lead just 1:29 into the game. Chris Terry sent a pass from the right circle between the legs of a Norfolk defender to Riley Nash in the slot. Nash sent a wrist shot between the blocker and right leg of Admirals goaltender Dustin Tokarski for a 1-0 Charlotte lead.
Norfolk tied the game at just less than five minutes later. James Wright entered the attacking zone through the slot and spun around on his forehand to send a pass to Matt Fornataro in the left faceoff circle. Fornataro sent a shot past the glove of Charlotte goaltender Justin Pogge for his fifth goal of the season at 6:22.
The Checkers took a 2-1 lead early in the second period as a power play expired. Zach Boychuk sent a cross-crease pass to Bryan Rodney in the left circle for a shot past a diving Tokarski at 3:20.
The lead was again short-lived, as the Admirals tied the game at 2-2 fewer than two minutes later. Juraj Simek emerged from the right corner and sent a shot from the right circle toward the net. Pierre-Cedric Labrie was parked in the crease and deflected the shot up and over the blocker of Pogge at 5:02 for his first goal of the season.
Norfolk took a 3-2 lead on Labrie’s second goal of the contest just over nine minutes later. He took the puck from the right corner through the right circle and into the slot before sending a shot past the gloved left hand of Pogge at 14:36.
The Checkers out-shot the Admirals 16-7 in the third period and scored twice in an eleven-second span moments after pulling Pogge in favor of the extra attacker. Charlotte tied the game at 3-3 with 53 seconds remaining after Dalpe re-directed a Drayson Bowman point shot. Dalpe then put the visitors ahead 4-3 after taking a Jerome Samson feed on a quick-developing odd-man rush and scoring the game-winning goal with only 42 second left.
Dustin Tokarski (34 shots, 30 saves) took the loss. Justin Pogge (31 shots, 28 saves) earned the win.
Both Norfolk and Charlotte were 0-3 on the power play.
