Admirals Power Past IceCaps in Preseason Finale

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – The Norfolk Admirals scored three consecutive power play goals to erase a 2-1 deficit and defeat the St. John’s IceCaps, 5-2, in the team’s preseason finale on Sunday afternoon at the Mile One Center. The Admirals, who claimed two of three preseason games from the IceCaps, will open the regular season on Friday night at Norfolk Scope Arena against the Charlotte Checkers.

Jeff Dimmen, Alexandre Picard and Carter Ashton each scored power play goals as the Admirals went 3-for-5 with the man advantage. Michel Ouellet and Tyler Johnson also tallied for Norfolk. The Admirals did not allow a power play goal on five St. John’s opportunities.

The Admirals took a 1-0 lead just 1:08 into the game when Michel Ouellet’s shot from a sharp angle snuck past IceCaps goaltender Edward Pasquale.

St. John’s leveled the score at 1-1 less than four minutes later with a Riley Armstrong wraparound goal at 4:48.

The IceCaps went ahead 2-1 late in the second stanza. Former Admiral Jason Jaffray one-timed a Marco Rosa offering from the faceoff circle that eluded Norfolk netminder Dustin Tokarski at 14:49.

The lead lasted less than four minutes, as the Admirals leveled the score at 2-2 with a Jeff Dimmen power play goal. Dimmen accepted a drop pass near the point, skated in a few strides and sent a wrist shot past new St. John’s goaltender Peter Mannino at 18:39.

Norfolk used their second power play goal to claim the lead 7:30 into the third period. Trevor Smith sent a shot on net that Mannino thought he had in his glove. However, the puck bounced out, and Alexandre Picard sent it across the goal line for a 3-2 Admirals lead.

Carter Ashton gave the Admirals some insurance with a third power play tally. Ashton’s goal was assisted by Cory Conacher and Mark Barberio at 16:10.

Tyler Johnson sealed the win for Norfolk with an empty-net tally at 19:39.

Norfolk was 3-5 on the power play. St. John’s was 0-5.
