Admirals Drop Decision to Phantoms

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk Admirals (13-9-0-1) fell 5-1 to the Adirondack Phantoms (13-7-0-1), on Friday night at Norfolk Scope Arena. The same two teams meet tomorrow night at Scope at 7:15 p.m. before the Admirals embark on a three game road trip.

Carter Ashton scored his team-leading 13th goal for the Admirals while goaltender Jaroslav Janus made 17 saves.

The Phantoms took a 1-0 lead in the first period with the first of Tye McGinn’s two goals. While on a power play, McGinn picked up a pass from teammate Ben Holmstrom in the lower slot and sent a wrist shot over the glove of Janus. The goal was McGinn’s third of the season and came at the 5:49 mark of the opening period.

The Admirals responded just 29 seconds later to knot the game at 1-1. Tyler Johnson retrieved a rebound behind the Phantoms' net and fed a pass to Ashton in the mid-slot. Ashton sent a slap shot over the glove of Leighton at 6:18.

Adirondack took a 2-1 lead on Holmstrom’s second point of the night. After an Admirals turnover, Holmstrom’s first shot was denied by a sprawling Janus. Holmstrom picked up the loose rebound and snuck it under Janus at 7:23 of the second period.

McGinn’s second goal of the game gave the Phantoms a 3-1 lead with just over seven minutes to go in the second. After carrying the puck through the neutral zone, McGinn sent a shot from the high slot through a screen and over the stick side of Janus at 13:02.

Former Admirals captain Dan Jancevski extended the Adirondack lead to 4-1 with his second goal of the season. Jancevski’s shot from the blue line found its way through traffic and behind Janus at 4:09 of the third period.

The Phantoms capped off the scoring at 5-1 with an empty net goal by Denis Hamel with 5:10 remaining in the game.

Jaroslav Janus (5-4-1) turned aside 18 of 22 shots for the loss. Michael Leighton (10-5-0) stopped 28 of 29 shots for the win.

Norfolk was 0-4 on the power play. Adirondack was 1-5 with the man advantage.
