Johnson's Buzzer-Beater Beats Phantoms

NORFOLK, Va. – Tyler Johnson scored twice – including the game-winning goal with 30 seconds left in regulation – to lead the Norfolk Admirals (14-9-0-1) over the Adirondack Phantoms (13-8-0-1), 2-1, on Saturday night at Norfolk Scope Arena. The Admirals now embark on a three game road trip beginning with back-to-back games against the Binghamton Senators on Friday and Saturday nights.

Johnson’s two goals were his seventh and eighth of the season. Goaltender Dustin Tokarski turned aside 15 of 16 shots he faced to extend his personal winning streak to four games.

After a scoreless first period, the Phantoms took a 1-0 lead just more than five minutes into the middle stanza. Jason Akeson’s seventh goal of the season came as he fired a slap shot from the top of the left faceoff circle over the right shoulder of Tokarski. The power play goal came at 5:01.

Norfolk knotted the game at 1-1 with just over seven minutes remaining in regulation. Rookie forward Tyler Johnson collected a pass from teammate Jeff Dimmen in the center of the right faceoff circle. Johnson carried the puck into the lower slot and fired a shot on net that deflected off an Adirondack defender’s leg and over the glove of Phantoms netminder Michael Leighton at 12:46.

With thirty seconds remaining in regulation and the Admirals on the power play, Johnson picked up a loose rebound in front of the Phantoms’ net and buried a shot over a sprawling Leighton to give Norfolk a 2-1 lead.

Dustin Tokarski (9-5-0) turned aside 15 of 16 shots for his fourth consecutive victory. Michael Leighton (10-6-0) stopped 32 of 34 shots in the defeat.

Norfolk was 0-5 on the power play. Adirondack was 1-7 with the man advantage.
