BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Trevor Smith registered his second-consecutive three-point night as the Norfolk Admirals (16-9-0-1) defeated the Binghamton Senators (9-16-1-1), 5-2, on Saturday night at the Broome County Veteran’s Memorial Arena. The Admirals wrap-up their three-game in three night road trip in Hershey, PA., as they visit their East-Division rival, the Hershey Bears.
Smith had a goal and two assists while Cory Conacher scored twice in the contest. Pierre-Cedric Labrie added two assists while Tyler Johnson and J.T. Wyman each added a goal of their own in the victory. Admirals netminder Jaroslav Janus turned aside 15 of 17 shots for his sixth victory of the season.
The Admirals and Senators exchanged power play goals late in the first period. Norfolk went ahead 1-0 with Trevor Smith’s 12th goal of the season. While the Admirals enjoyed a five-on-four man advantage, Admirals defenseman Evan Oberg fed Smith with a cross-ice pass. Smith picked up the pass and slipped a shot on the short side of Senators netminder Mike McKenna at the 16:55 mark of the opening period.
Less than two minutes later, the Senators knotted the game at 1-1 with a power play goal of their own. Senators’ forward Stephane Da Costa fired a shot from the blue line through a screen that deflected off the stick of former Admiral forward Rob Klinkhammer and over the stick of Janus at the 18:41 mark of the first period.
Norfolk took a 2-1 lead on Cory Conacher’s 14th goal of the season. Conacher picked up a pass from Smith in the front of the Senators’ crease and sent a shot over a sprawling McKenna and into the top of the right corner of the net at the 8:22 mark of the second period.
The Admirals extended their lead to 3-1 late in the second period. From behind the Senators’ net, Admirals forward Carter Ashton fed Tyler Johnson a pass in front of the net. Johnson chipped a shot that deflected off the top of the stick of McKenna and into the net for Johnson’s ninth goal of the season at the 17:14 mark of the middle frame.
Binghamton climbed within one goal at 3-2 with a third period power play goal. As the Admirals skated a man down, Mike Hoffman sent a slap shot from between the face-off circles over the glove of Janus at the 8:58 mark of the third period.
Just 70 seconds later, Cory Conacher netted his second goal of the contest to extend the Admirals lead to 4-2. Pierre-Cedric Labrie sent a shot from the point, which Conacher deflected from the lower-slot over McKenna for his team-leading 15th goal of the season at the 10:08 mark of the third period.
J.T. Wyman capped off the scoring at 5-2 with an unassisted, empty-net shorthanded goal at the 18:46 mark of the final period.
Jaroslav Janus (6-4-1) turned aside 15 of 17 shots for the victory. Mike McKenna (3-7-0) stopped 37 of 41 shots for the loss.
