NORFOLK, Va. – In front of a season-high crowd of 7,227 for the fifth annual Pink in the Rink, Richard Panik recorded his first professional multiple-goal night and Matt Fornataro broke a 2-2 tie in the third period as the Norfolk Admirals (23-13-1-2) defeated the Connecticut Whale (19-14-2-4), 4-2, on Saturday night at Norfolk Scope Arena. The Admirals, who have won back-to-back games, now embark on a three-game road trip beginning Wednesday night in Albany.
Mike Angelidis capped off the scoring in the third period while netminder Dustin Tokarski made 24 saves for his 16th victory of the season. With an assist in the third period, defenseman Mark Barberio extended his point streak at home to eight games. Mike Kostka recorded two assists.
The game was played on pink ice, as the Admirals partnered with the Tidewater Affiliate of Susan G. Komen For the Cure for the fifth annual Pink in the Rink.
Norfolk took a 1-0 lead on Panik’s first goal of the contest. Panik picked up a pass from Evan Oberg and sent a wrist shot over the blocker of Whale goaltender Cameron Talbot at 13:45 of the first period.
Panik's second tally of the night gave the Admirals a 2-0 lead. After causing a turnover at the Whale blue-line, Panik carried the puck around a trio of Whale defenseman and fired a shot over the blocker of Talbot at 10:20 of the second period.
Just over five-minutes later, Kelsey Tessier narrowed the Norfolk lead to 2-1. Tessier broke into the Admirals zone alongside a teammate and sent a shot over both an Admirals defender and the glove of Tokarski at 15:32.
Nearly a minute later, the Whale knotted the game at 2-2. After a faceoff win by Sean Avery, Aaron Voros sent a shot from the left circle through a crowd and over Tokarski at 16:21.
The Admirals took a 3-2 lead on Fornataro’s fifth goal of the season. Fornataro re-deflected a pass from Mike Kostka over the blocker of Talbot at 4:14 of the third period.
Mike Angelidis put Norfolk ahead 4-2 with a shot from the top of the left face-off circle over the glove of Talbot at 17:21 of the third.
Norfolk was 0-4 on the power play while Connecticut was 0-3 with the man advantage.
The Admirals now embark on a three-game road trip beginning Wednesday night in Albany, N.Y. against the Devils. On Friday night, the Admirals visit the Syracuse Crunch followed by a rematch with the Whale on Saturday night in Connecticut.
The Admirals return to Scope on Tuesday, January 24th, as they drop the puck on a three-game homestand, beginning with a matchup against the Charlotte Checkers in the fifth game of the GEICO Challenge Cup. The puck drops at 7:15 p.m. in another Admirals Value Night of the 2011-12 season.
