Three-Goal Third Period Dooms Admirals in Springfield
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Norfolk Admirals (27-18-1-2) surrendered three goals in the third period as they fell to the Springfield Falcons (22-22-1-2), 4-2, on Sunday afternoon at MassMutual Center. The Admirals return to Scope next week with contests against the Adirondack Phantoms on Friday and Saturday nights.
Pierre-Cedric Labrie and Michel Ouellet scored for Norfolk while goaltender Dustin Tokarski stopped 27 of 31 shots in the setback. Norfolk fell to 17-1-1-0 on the season when leading after two periods.
Springfield took a 1-0 lead midway through the first period on a tic-tac-toe passing play. With one Admiral already in the penalty box and another ticketed to join him on a delayed penalty, the Falcons were able to pull their goaltender in favor of an extra attacker for a six-on-four man advantage. Brent Regner fed a pass from the left circle to Cam Atkinson in the left corner. Atkinson then quickly centered the puck to Matt Calvert in the low slot, who sent a shot past Tokarski at 9:52.
Norfolk took the lead with a pair of goals in the second period. Labrie’s eighth goal of the season tied the game at 1-1. Mark Barberio sent a shot from the left point that was deflected into the right corner. Trevor Smith centered the puck into the slot, where Labrie found it and sent a shot over the right shoulder of Springfield netminder Paul Dainton at 14:40.
Ouellet’s tenth goal of the season came just over four minutes later on the power play to put Norfolk ahead, 2-1. Mike Kostka sent a shot from the right point that was stopped. The rebound ended up on Ouellet’s stick in the slot between the hashmarks, and he sent a forehand shot past a diving Dainton at 18:44.
The Admirals were undefeated in regulation this season when leading after the second period entering the game. However, the Falcons utilized two goals just 30 seconds apart midway through the final frame to erase Norfolk’s advantage. Springfield tied the game at 2-2 at 11:29 with a goal by defenseman Patrick Cullity. With the puck pinned in the left corner, Cullity pinched down from his position at the right point into the right circle. Calvert centered the puck to him from the left corner, and Cullity’s one-timer beat Tokarski’s glove.
Just 30 seconds later, Regner sent a shot from the left point that was deflected off the post by Andrew Joudrey. Maksim Mayorov found the rebound and stashed it into the net at 11:59 to give the Falcons a 3-2 lead.
Former Admiral Martin St. Pierre tallied an insurance goal just over three minutes later. Alexandre Giroux carried the puck into the attacking zone on a two-on-one with St. Pierre. Giroux stopped just before the crease and waited for a passing lane to open up. He then shuttled the puck to St. Pierre on the opposite side of the goalmouth, and St. Pierre put the puck past Tokarski’s right leg for the 4-2 Springfield lead at 15:16.
Dustin Tokarski (19-11-0) stopped 27 of 31 shots in defeat. Paul Dainton (5-3-0) stopped 24 of 26 shots for the victory.
Norfolk was 1-for-4 on the power play. Springfield was 1-for-8.
The Admirals return home on Friday and Saturday to face off against the Adirondack Phantoms. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and 7:15 p.m. on Saturday against the top affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers.
