TAMPA, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Lightning, NHL parent club of the Norfolk Admirals, have recalled forward Trevor Smith from the Admirals under emergency conditions today, Lightning Vice President and General Manager Steve Yzerman announced.
Smith, 27, has played in 58 games with the Admirals this season, recording 22 goals and 62 points. He ranks second on the Admirals for points, assists and plus/minus with a plus-27. He ranks third in the AHL in plus/minus and seventh in assists. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound forward has played in 340 career AHL games with Norfolk, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, the Syracuse Crunch and the Springfield Falcons. In those games, he has registered 114 goals and 254 points. He has also appeared in 10 career Calder Cup Playoff games, notching two goals and seven points.
A native of North Vancouver, British Columbia, Smith has played in 16 career NHL games with the Lightning and the New York Islanders, including nine games this season with Tampa Bay, notching two assists. He was signed as a free agent by the Lightning on July 5, 2011. He was originally undrafted out of the University of New Hampshire where he was selected to the All Hockey East First Team and a Second Team All American
The Admirals and Charlotte Checkers will square off once again on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. in North Carolina in the final game of the GEICO Challenge Cup. Norfolk (4-3-0-0, 8 points) currently leads Charlotte (3-3-1-0, 7 points) by one point in the race for the GEICO Challenge Cup, which will be awarded to the team with the most standings points in the 2011-12 season series.
