Conacher and Johnson Named to AHL All-Rookie Team

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The American Hockey League announced today that Norfolk Admirals forwards Cory Conacher and Tyler Johnson have been named to the 2011-12 AHL All-Rookie Team.

Conacher, 5-foot-8, 180 pounds, leads all AHL rookies in goals, assists, points, power play goals and game-winning goals. In 70 games with the Admirals, Conacher has posted 34 goals and 39 assists for 73 points. He has also posted 106 penalty minutes, a plus-11 rating, 14 power play goals and seven game-winning goals. Conacher leads the entire AHL in goals, ranks second overall in points and power play goals while tying for third overall in game-winning goals. He was a starter for the 2012 AHL All-Star Classic, where he had two goals and three points.

A 22-year-old native of Burlington, Ontario, Conacher has played in 77 career AHL games with Norfolk, the Milwaukee Admirals and the Rochester Americans, notching 38 goals and 79 points. He has played in seven career Calder Cup Playoff Games – all with Milwaukee last season – posting one assist.

An undrafted free agent, Conacher played four years at Canisus College prior to joining the professional ranks. He is the school’s all-time leader in goals with 62, game-winning goals with 12 and points with 147. He signed a one-year, AHL contract with the Admirals on July 5, 2011. He then signed a two-year, two-way contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning on March 1, 2012.

Johnson, 5-foot-9, 175 pounds, trails only Conacher in points among AHL rookies. In 70 games with the Admirals, Johnson has recorded 29 goals and 35 assists for 64 points. He also has registered 26 penalty minutes, a plus-13 rating, 10 power play goals and five game-winning goals. Johnson is tied for third among AHL rookies in goals and power play goals. He is also tied for sixth overall in the AHL in goals and ranks sixth overall in points. He was named the Reebok/AHL Player of the Month for March 2012 earlier this week.

Johnson, a 21-year-old native of Spokane, Washington, was signed as a free agent by the Tampa Bay Lightning on March 7, 2011. He played four junior seasons with Spokane in the WHL, winning a Memorial Cup title in 2008 and helping the United States to a gold medal at the 2010 World Junior Championships.

Conacher and Johnson become the seventh and eighth former Admirals to be named to AHL All-Rookie teams, joining goaltender Jeff Maund (2000-01), goaltender Michael Leighton (2001-02), forward Tyler Arnason (2001-02), forward Rene Bourque (2004-05), forward Martin St. Pierre (2005-06) and forward Troy Brouwer (2006-07).
