Admirals Join Forces with ECHL's Fort Wayne Komets
NORFOLK – The Norfolk Admirals will partner with the ECHL's Fort Wayne Komets during the 2012-13 season. The announcement of the affiliation agreement between the Admirals, the Anaheim Ducks (Norfolk's NHL partner), and the Komets was made yesterday.
The Komets make their ECHL debut in 2012-13 after winning the Central Hockey League’s (CHL) Presidents' Cup in 2011-12. Fort Wayne has hosted 60 seasons of Komets hockey in the International Hockey League (IHL), United Hockey League (UHL) and CHL, winning nine championships (seven IHL Turner Cups; one UHL Colonial Cup; one CHL Presidents' Cup). The Komets have won their respective league’s championship in four of the last five seasons and averaged over 7,000 fans for 10 consecutive seasons at Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
Recent Norfolk affiliates in the ECHL have included Florida (2010-12), Augusta (2008-09), Mississippi (2007-08) and Toledo (2006-07). Recent Anaheim affiliates in the ECHL have included Elmira (2010-12), Bakersfield (2008-10) and Augusta (2006-08).
Currently led by former Anaheim assistant coach Al Sims (1993-96), the Komets will make their ECHL debut on Friday, October 12 when they host Kalamazoo at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
The ECHL celebrates its 25th Anniversary in 2012-13 and is the third-longest tenured professional hockey league behind only the NHL and AHL. The ECHL has had 298 players reach the NHL since 2002-03 when it changed its focus to become the primary developmental league for the NHL and the AHL.
