NORFOLK, VA – Goaltender Nathan Lawson made 23 saves to help lead the Binghamton Senators to a 4-1 victory over the Norfolk Admirals Saturday evening at the Norfolk Scope. The loss was the first for the Admirals (2-1-0-1) in regulation this season.
Looking to rebound from a tough first period on Friday, the Senators (2-1-0-0) came out on the attack and scored the game’s first goal at 7:59. Matt Puempel carried the puck into the zone on the left wing. After fighting off a check, he dropped the puck inside the slot to Darren Kramer. Kramer stepped into the shot and unleashed a drive that ripped high into the net over the shoulder of Admirals goaltender John Gibson to give the Senators a 1-0 lead after the first period of play.
It took just 11 seconds for the Senators to add to their lead in the second. After winning the faceoff to start the period, the Admirals coughed up the puck at its own blue line. Mika Zibanejad stole the puck and carried on the left wing side and flipped pass across the ice to Mike Hoffman. Hoffman dropped a pass on the backhand to Andre Petersson in the slot who flipped the shot into the net for the goal to put the score at 2-0.
In the second, the Admirals didn’t register a shot on goal until the 11:24 mark of the period. Gibson continued to fight off Binghamton shots to keep the score at 2-0.
The Admirals got on the board at 13:02 of the period when Rickard Rakell picked the pocket of Mike Hoffman in the Binghamton end, and curled back for a breakaway chance. Rakell cruised just above the crease, deked to the backhand and flipped the puck past the blocker of Senators netminder Nathan Lawson for the goal. Rakell’s third of the season pulled Norfolk within one at the end of 40 minutes played.
Binghamton countered at 4:35 in the third, when David Dziurzynski grabbed the puck on the right wing boards and sent a pass across the ice to Derek Grant. Grant wristed a shot that beat Gibson high to put the score at 3-1.
The Senators locked down defensively for the remainder of the game, and later added an empty net goal by Jim O'Brien to seal the 4-1 victory.
Lawson who stopped all ten shots in a relief effort on Friday, turned aside 23 of 24 shots to earn his second win of the season. Gibson takes the loss allowing three goals on 30 shots faced in the game.
The Admirals will open up a two game home set against the Albany Devils beginning next Friday, October 18 at 7:30 p.m. Friday's game is Military Appreciation Night, and the first 1,500 fans will receive thundersticks. The two teams will meet again on Saturday (Oct. 19) at 7:15 p.m.
