NORFOLK, VA – Scott Wedgewood made 25 saves to help lead the Albany Devils to a 2-1 shootout victory over the Norfolk Admirals at Scope on Saturday night. The Admirals earned three of a possible four points over the Devils this weekend.
Norfolk (3-1-0-2) came out of the gate skating with energy and purpose, which lead to more chances on net, while Albany (3-1-0-1) had some of their own. Both teams used the entirety of the rink and several shots on goal which forced each netminder to make a handful of saves to open the contest.
Things started to heat up for the Admirals during the last minute of the first period after Albany’s Eric Gelinas was called for a penalty. Alex Grant rung a shot off the post on an empty net after Devils goalie Scott Wedgewood accidentally found Grant’s stick with a clearing attempt.
Neither side found the back of the net in the first period of play, and shots finished even at six as the Admirals skated into the second frame with a man advantage.
After each team killed off their fair share of penalties in the second, the Devils lit up the scoreboard first with a power play goal from Scott Timmins at 11:29. Albany’s Eric Gelinas slid a pass through the slot to Joe Whitney, who zipped a one timer to Timmins on the edge of the crease. Timmins lowered his stick for the deflection goal coming with just over eight and a half minutes to play in the second. Albany took the 1-0 lead into the second break.
Albany continued their aggressive approach in the third and remained on top for the vast majority of the third period. On the final power play of regulation, Norfolk’s Brett Skinner and Kevin Gagne combined to assist on Charlie Sarault’s wrister from the slot at 14:51, which beat Wedgewood for the tying goal.
Albany and Norfolk skated to a deadlock for the remainder of regulation to send the game to overtime. Neither team generated much in the extra session, forcing a shootout for the second consecutive night. This time the Devils avenged last night’s shootout loss by shutting out Norfolk in tonight’s shootout. Markers by Albany’s Joe Whitney and Stefan Matteau earned the Devils the win. Rickard Rakell, Holland, Joseph Cramarossa and Devante Smith-Pelly were each denied by Wedgewood in the shootout.
Wedgwood earns the win making 25 saves and turning aside all four shooters faced in the shootout. Gibson was sharp in the loss, stopping 28 of 29 shots faced.
The Admirals finish their four game homestand spanning across the last two weekends and will now hit the road for the next two weeks. Norfolk went 2-1-0-1 during the recent home stretch at Scope. Norfolk will open a six game road stretch at Adirondack next Friday. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Hershey, Albany and Bridgeport are all on the upcoming road schedule before Norfolk returns home to host the Syracuse Crunch on Nov. 8 and 9.
