Norfolk, VA.- Trevor Mingoia took control for the Admirals on Saturday night scoring all three goals as Norfolk beat ECHL-leading Florida 3-2 in overtime on Saturday night.
Mingoia’s first career hat trick was the key for the Admirals as the forward scored a goal in the first, third and overtime periods. It was the second hat trick scored by an Admiral this season, both coming at home. Kenton Helgesen and Thomas Frazee each added a pair of assists in the victory. Jamie Murray netted his second win of the season.
With a man-advantage half-way thru the opening frame the Everblades struck first. Stephen MacAulay’s blast from the left point found its way past Murray at the 10:56 mark of the period. The Admirals would have an answer before the period was over however. Kenton Helgesen entered the zone on a two-on-one with Trevor Mingoia. After taking a short pass Mingoia quickly deked from the backhand to the forehand and tucked the puck into a nearly empty net to tie the game at 1-1, his first goal of the night.
Florida retook the lead at the 13:37 mark of the second period. Justin Kea skated into the slot and tapped a backhand to Nolan LaPorte who sent a shot past Murray, giving Florida a 2-1 lead. The lead would hold at the second intermission despite Norfolk outshooting the Everblades 20-18 at the break.
The Admirals knotted the game at 2-2 just about halfway thru the final period of regulation. On the man-advantage Thomas Frazee let a slap shot loose from the top of the left circle. Parked in front of the net Kenton Helgesen deflected the puck to Trevor Mingoia who was waiting at the side of the net. Mingoia quickly capitalized, scoring his second of the night and tying the game at 2-2. As regulation wound down the Darik Angeli drew a double-minor on Justin Kea.
Regulation ended with the game tied at 2-2, with Norfolk taking 1:46 of power play time into the extra period.
The power play built momentum but Norfolk was unable to score on the man-advantage. With time winding down in the overtime Trevor Mingoia went back to work. The forward took a pass from Thomas Frazee and turned up ice. Mingoia cut through the Everblades defense, stepping into the offensive zone. Just a few steps over the blue line Mingoia snapped off a fast wrister that found the top left corner of the cage, giving the Admirals their second overtime victory of the season.
Jamie Murray made 32 saves on 34 shots in his second victory of the season, while Callum Booth made 36 saves on 39 shots.
Norfolk finished the night one-for-seven on the power play while Florida was one-for-six.
The Admirals will wrap up November on the road as they head to Jacksonville for a pair of games to start a five-game road trip.
