NORFOLK, VA. — The Norfolk Admirals, proud ECHL affiliates of the Carolina Hurricanes and Chicago Wolves, went 1-1 this past week as they took on the South Carolina Stingrays and Reading Royals.
The Admirals were a perfect 3-0 on home ice going into last Wednesday’s game against South Carolina. It was also the first of 11 matchups between the Stingrays and the Admirals.
South Carolina was playing without the services of their two veteran leaders in Andrew Cherniwchan and Ben Holmstrom who were both out with injuries. As a result, the Admirals pounced on the shorthanded Stingrays.
Darien Craighead, who was one of five players who suited up for South Carolina at one point in their respective careers, got the scoring started with his fourth of the season. Alex Tonge would one past Stingrays goaltender Hunter Shepard late in the third period and would include an empty-net goal to seal the deal for Norfolk, making them 4-0 at Norfolk Scope.
Craighead finished with three points (1g, 2a). Goaltender Beck Warm would register his first shutout as an Admiral, making 23 saves.
On Sunday afternoon, the Admirals met the Royals for the sixth time this season. The Admirals hadn’t won in regulation against Reading in five years.
Jared Brandt snuck one past Warm to give the Royals a 1-0 lead. In the second period, the Admirals scored two goals that were disallowed due to goaltender interference.
After Jacob Prichard extended the Royals lead to two, Nick Schaus scored his first of the season, but it wasn’t enough to make the comeback complete.
The Royals are now 4-2 against Norfolk this season and the two clubs won’t see each other until March.
